- Logan Conway bought coffee with his mom after failing his music degree
- He was convicted of abusing a 14-year-old waitress
- He will spend at least two years in prison
Logan Ernest Conway, 34, has pleaded guilty to having illegal sex.
Conway was 29 when he started abusing the 14-year-old waitress in May 2017.
Upon sentencing, District Court Judge Jane Schammer said Conway’s offense continued for two and a half years, but was “kept under wraps” as he knew the ramifications given the age of victim.
“You knew how old she was; she went to work regularly always wearing her school uniform, as a lot of her shifts were after school,” Justice Schammer said.
“The victim, as a young employee, was in a vulnerable position with you, her much older employer.
“You understand that as a child, the victim did not have the capacity to consent to engage in sexual activity.”
The offense was only revealed when another ex-girlfriend reported the crime to the police.
The “worst decision” taken after a lost career
Judge Schammer said Conway’s offense occurred at a “very low point” in his life, after failing his music education degree, meaning he could no longer “pursue his goal. to become a music teacher ”.
He bought the suburban cafe with his mother but was “exhausted” after working long days with minimal financial reward, and the victim responded to his need for personal attention.
“You recognize that getting into the relationship was the worst decision you’ve ever made,” Justice Schammer said.
“I accept that you deeply regret the offense and that you are ashamed and remorseful.”
Judge Schammer said Conway took responsibility for his offense early on and showed remorse and empathy for the victim.
Psychiatric evaluations revealed that Conway was not a pedophile and had no sexual interest in adolescents.
Conway shivered and cried in the dock as he was sentenced to five years and four months in prison with a two-year non-parole period.
He will also be barred from any future work with children.
