For comedy fans, Bill Oakley is a legend. A long moment Simpsons writer, showrunner and executive producer, Oakley and his writing partner, Josh Weinstein, are responsible for classic episodes like “Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy” and “Who Shot Mr. Burns” in two parts; perhaps the most famous, Oakley wrote the classic piece of steamed ham in “22 Shorts About Springfield”. But in the food world, Oakley is known as a fast food scholar, reviewing the latest chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, and pizzas for its thousands of followers. Its annual fast food prices, hosted via his Instagram account, shoots celebrity cameos like Ike Barinholtz and Jay baruchel. Vulture tagged it “2018 quintessential fast food reviewer, “And the Wrap called him”the Gordon Ramsay of fast food. “
Oakley is also a Portlander, who can often be spotted having a burger at Fuller’s, a parma chicken at Summit Shack, or a po’boy from Matt & Memere’s. We asked her about her favorite trolleys, restaurants and snacks in Portland; find her favorite Portland haunts below.
Best burger: “I will say Reach the point. It depends if I want a burger with a bunch of stuff on it. If I don’t, it’s Hit the Spot, but when I want a burger with a bunch of stuff on it, it’s Fuller’s Burger Shack. But there are a lot that I like: Rough Draft, Farmer and the beast. I don’t demand to have a smash burger; I don’t care, necessarily.
Best fry: “I don’t know if I’m qualified to answer that. I don’t really like fries; I did a podcast last week where I tried all the fast food fries, and I’d rather have a second burger. I think I would rather have Jojo ‘s jojos for a side dish of potatoes.
Best Fried Chicken Sandwich: “It’s Jojo, but it’s tied with Basil’s. After that, Big’s Chicken. The chicken sandwich at Yonder, I loved it when I had it last year. But I don’t usually order chicken sandwiches. I would always prefer a burger over a chicken sandwich.
Favorite fried food in Portland that’s not chicken or fry: “There are so many fried foods that I love. I love the fried shrimp po’boy Avenue Saint-Charles in the Rose Biggi Food Cart in Beaverton. I love the fried green tomato po’boy Matt and Memere. Fried cod at Beater fish, Absolutely. The other thing that stays in my mind are the fried pickles Summit hut. First, the pickles – some fried pickles are too sour, too much dill, but this guy makes his pickles himself. They have this absolutely perfect amount of coating. “
Favorite pizza: “I have to divide it into different categories. My favorite New York is Pizza Jerk. My favorite (thick crust) is Pop pizza. My favorite Chicago style (tavern) … love it Jerry’s, But Bridge City has been around for years and is just as good. It’s hard to get one, but I believe they’re as good as (Jerry’s), and his good. “
Favorite barbecue: “It’s interesting, the only kind of barbecue I really like are North Carolina pulled pork sandwiches. There aren’t many places that make Carolina style the way I like it. One of the places that does is Bark city, and they have my favorite pulled pork sandwich. The running guy Apizza Scholls made pulled pork sandwiches, gave me one last week, and it was one of the best I’ve had in years. I don’t know if he will start selling them.
Favorite tacos: “I was going to Taqueria Los PuñalesI think the chicken tinga is my favorite. These are my favorite tacos, at least right now.
Favorite sandwich: “There are a lot of sandwiches that I love – Jojo, the po’boys I mentioned. The chicken club sandwich at Fuller, this is definitely my favorite thing there. It’s an old fashioned sandwich, but there’s that other layer with chicken salad, it’s absolutely divine.
Best ice cream: “I know that’s the cliché answer, but Salt & Straw. The pear and blue cheese seemed like a weird sight to me, but I love it. “
Preferred mid-week lunch: “My favorite place to go right now is (the food basket) Basic PDX, this is my new favorite place. The carts I like the most are Summit Shack and Papi Sal’s, but the selection of carts there is so good that I can never make up my mind. I will also go Moore Food & Company more often than not, it’s so good: 40 feet from the Atlas Pizza on Division, there’s this food cart that just moved in with some great cheesesteaks, and the space they’ve put in. place at this location is absolutely beautiful. I haven’t been there several times, but it will become my meeting place for lunch. Even without a press, it’s pretty packed. And the setting is beautiful.
Favorite party restaurant: “I haven’t been to an indoor restaurant for so long, but when I did I would go to Laurelhurst Market. I don’t go to a lot of fancy restaurants to sit down, but when I did, that was it. It’s a beautiful space, it’s probably my favorite restaurant of the fanciest caliber.
Favorite Food Basket: “Skidbladnir doesn’t get any attention, and that’s fantastic. I had the best meal I have had in a long time there. I had two things: I had a marinated lamb sandwich, it was absolutely amazing, and the Norwegian meatballs there, I remember those. Their food is certainly restaurant quality, and an excellent restaurant at that.
