British press denounces Harry and Meghan’s trip to New York, Will and Kate celebrated

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in New York for Saturday’s Global Citizen Live concert.
  • British tabloids are already criticizing the couple’s behavior during the visit.
  • Outlets celebrated Prince William and Kate Middleton for similar reasons when they arrived in 2014.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in New York for their first in-person engagements since welcoming their daughter Lili in June.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in New York for the Global Citizen Live charity concert on Saturday, during which they will promote vaccine equity, according to Vanity Fair.

They would have arrived wednesday, before making their first appearance at One World Observatory on Thursday morning, as Insider reported.

Harry and Markle have been in New York for less than 24 hours, but several British tabloids have already disputed their trip.

For example, the Daily Mail criticized the couple for having cocktails on Wednesday evening, and for don’t bring Archie and Lili with them in New York.

The Daily Mail too questioned Markle’s outerwear for his visit to One World and criticized how many jewels she wore during his visit to the observatory.

Likewise, The Scottish Sun implied that it was “embarrassing” that the couple treated their visit like a royal visit, and The Mirror featured a body image expert who claimed that Markle and Harry appeared worried about their appearances, even though they were affectionate and smiling at each other throughout the morning.

The coverage is markedly different from how many of the same outlets wrote about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s trip to 2014 in New York, even though the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did the exact same things as Markle and Harry.

For example, several British tabloids celebrated Middleton’s decision to wear a pink coat during her visit to the 9/11 memorial.

The daily mail said she “fought the gloomy weather” with the garment, and the Daily Express named the coat one of her best outfits of 2014.

The same outlets criticized Markle and Harry for wearing black during their visit to the 9/11 museum, although it is quite common to wear black at memorial sites.

The Daily Express amplified tweets that questioned the couple’s dark clothes, and daily mail asked mockingly if Markle forgot to check the weather because she wore an 80 degree coat in one of her headlines.

Likewise, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly staying at the Carlyle Hotel, where William and Middleton stayed during their visit in 2014.

At the time, the Daily Mail wrote: “Kate lands with a bump: Pregnant Duchess arrives at Diana-favored New York hotel as royal couple lands in the Big Apple,” focusing on Middleton’s pregnancy and Princess Diana’s love for the hotel in its title.

But writing about Markle and Harry staying at the same hotel, the Daily Mail titled their item: “The royal couple leave the kids in LA for drinks at a chic bar inside their $ 1,300-a-night Carlyle hotel to kick off a three-day visit to New York,” highlighting the price of the hotel instead of his connection to Princess Diana.

The latter also considers Harry and Markle’s trip to be a childless getaway, although William and Middleton did not take Prince George with them on their 2014 trip.

The visit to New York is not the first time that the British press has criticized Markle for the same things as Middleton, like breaking royal protocol with shoes or asking people not to take pictures of her.

And more recently, people have slammed UK tabloids for their sexist reactions to the coverage of Markle and Harry’s Time 100.

Representatives for the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
