DoorDash is testing in-app reservations

Diving Brief:

  • DoorDash drives in-app reservations, the platform confirmed to Restaurant Dive in an email Tuesday. This news was first reported by Expedite, a restaurant technology newsletter published by Kristen Hawley.
  • The “Reservations” button appears in the app for consumers in New York and Chicago, but a Restaurant Dive reporter was also able to book a restaurant reservation through the app in Los Angeles.
  • The reservation pilot appears to be powered by restaurant reservation platform SevenRooms. At the time of going to press, DoorDash did not respond to a request for comment on the geographic scope of the pilot. SevenRooms declined to share details about its test markets.

Overview of the dive:

DoorDash customers, in areas where the feature is active, can select “Reservations” from the menu at the top of the app. DoorDash then displays nearby restaurants with reservations. Once a user selects a restaurant, the app lists the available reservation times. After you select a time, the app shares a “Reservation Confirmed” message with directions to the restaurant and a note that the message was sent in partnership with SevenRooms.

A Los Angeles-based Restaurant Dive reporter was only able to see DoorDash’s reservation option by entering a New York address in the profile section. Next, the app populated a map of restaurants near Los Angeles based on the reporter’s current location, but kept the “Reservations” filter, allowing for a restaurant reservation in Los Angeles.

After booking, the reporter received an email booking confirmation that included the SevenRooms branding, but not the DoorDash branding. The restaurant, Robata Jinya in Los Angeles, confirmed that the reservation appeared in its system. Staff members at the establishment and the restaurant company’s vice president of marketing were unaware of DoorDash’s reservation pilot. Notably, the location lists SevenRooms as an online booking partner.

This Method Didn’t Work for a Restaurant Dive Team Reporter in Washington, D.C. It’s unclear whether the feature is supposed to be available outside of New York and Chicago, where the Reservations button is visible in the app, according to screenshots of DoorDash users seen by Restaurant Dive. Other DoorDash users in Los Angeles that Restaurant Dive spoke to also didn’t see the Reservations button in their app.

“To evolve with merchant needs, we are constantly testing innovations to identify new growth opportunities for partners, improving the way consumers interact with their business. We are evaluating the results of this pilot and have nothing more to share at this time,” a DoorDash spokesperson wrote.

DoorDash has added features to improve its platform’s value proposition for small restaurants, including a product dashboard that debuted in August. Reservations — a key tool for managing traffic at full-service, small-unit, and independent restaurants — can give DoorDash a competitive edge over other third-party restaurant delivery services, which typically don’t offer integrated reservations. .

SevenRooms brought its waitlist product to Google in 2020.
