Experts shed light on the harmful effects of fast food on your gut – Winnipeg

Junk food, while tasty, is bad for gut health and can do a lot of damage to your body in the first hour, experts say.

Shortly after eating it, you experience a significant drop in sugar which can make you crave more unhealthy foods, according to Dr. Julie Garza of the Florida Wellness Institute.

“Your blood sugar has gone down so much that you now have to bring it back up,” she told 680 CJOB.

While the recommendation is to go for a healthier choice when it comes to choosing a meal, there are some things you can do to limit the effects on your body if you indulge in a tasty treat.

“Above all, take high-quality digestive enzymes when you eat because we lack this area in our diets,” Garza says.

Unfortunately, heavy consumption of carbonated drinks, coffee, and tea could potentially make the problem worse.

“What it does is it stops you from absorbing nutrition,” she said. “You eat this food that’s hard to break down, then you load it with pop on it and now you just have a disaster.”

Gut health is very important to consider if you want to take care of your overall health, according to Angela Martens, registered dietitian at Body Measure Inc.

“It affects our metabolism, it can affect blood sugar, it plays a key role in how our immune system works”

Martens talks about the gut microbiome, which is one word to describe the trillions of microorganisms found in the small and large intestines that play a huge role in our health.

“Research also shows that the gut microbiome is also linked to our brain health.”

Marten offers a few key things to consider if you want to keep your gut microbiome as healthy as possible.

“Eat plenty of foods with fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and whole grains,”
