A small group of disgruntled Manchester United supporters have made their way to the club’s chief executive’s house to voice their concerns amid widespread unrest in the fanbase over Glazer family ownership and other issues.
They probably got more than they bargained for.
The fan-planned protest turned into an impromptu meeting with Richard Arnold, the CEO, at a pub where a range of topics appeared to be discussed, from owners to the club’s financial troubles to the high-profile lawsuit of the midfielder. Barcelona pitch Frenkie. DeJong.
“Richard has heard a group of fans have met at a pub near his home,” United said.
“He went to meet them, offered them all a drink, listened to their views and explained what the club was doing to achieve success on the pitch, improve the stadium and enhance engagement with supporters.”
A video leaked on social media showing Arnold, who took over the role in February, addressing the concerns quite directly. It was unclear whether he knew he was being filmed as he spoke about how United had ‘burnt money’ and the need to invest more in facilities such as the stadium and the training ground.
Greater fan engagement has been an issue of growing importance among United supporters following heightened hostility towards American ownership due to the Glazer family’s involvement in plans to launch a European Super League and the dwindling fortunes of the team, which is without a major trophy in five years.
Executive co-chairman Joel Glazer attended Fan Advisory Council meetings in January and again in April, as fans vented their anger at games at Old Trafford at the end of another disappointing season.
The arrival of another new manager, the Dutchman Erik ten Hag, and the departure of a number of players – Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, among others – who received large salaries and underperforming in recent seasons means there is perhaps cause for quiet optimism heading into the 2022-23 campaign from August.
United are yet to sign a note, with De Jong’s pursuit seemingly hitting snags at a time when the team’s main rivals have agreed big deals of their own.
Manchester City have already signed Erling Haaland, one of the world’s most wanted players, while another highly rated young striker, Darwin Nunez, has joined Liverpool amid reported interest from United. Tottenham and Arsenal have also been busy in the transfer market in the month since the end of last domestic season.
In the leaked video, Arnold can be seen saying ‘the money the manager and director of football want is there’ but it hasn’t been spent yet.
United have won more Premier League titles than any other side – 20 – but their last major trophy was the Europa League at the end of the 2016-17 season.
In the recently ended season, United finished the league season in sixth place and with 58 points – the worst Premier League campaign in team history by points.
