A reckless drunk driver is in jail after trying to escape law enforcement and crashing into a business on Jefferson Davis Highway.

At 8:14 a.m. on Saturday morning, Deputy BE Vaughn observed a Toyota Corolla traveling northbound on the Jefferson Davis Freeway near Kings Crest Drive at 87 mph in the 45 mph zone. Deputy Vaughn activated his emergency equipment to perform a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated to over 100 mph in an attempt to evade justice.

The driver passed a red light on Telegraph Road and made a sharp left, hitting the Fusion restaurant, damaging the building. Still determined to escape, the driver attempted to escape on foot, but was quickly overpowered by Deputy Vaughn.

The driver has been identified as Yony Moreno Ortiz, 24, of Dumfries. Moreno Ortiz smelled strongly of alcoholic drink, had glassy eyes and slurred speech. An open bottle of Corona was found in the vehicle.

After being checked in hospital, Moreno Ortiz was charged with impaired driving in five years, driving after license confiscation, escape, destruction of property, reckless driving, drinking and driving and disobeying a traffic light. circulation.
