Sozai in Clawson Named to Magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants List

Sozai, a small sushi restaurant in a strip mall in Clawson known for serving sustainable seafood, has been named to Bon Appétit’s 2022 Top 50 New Restaurants list. The magazine’s list was published this week and was compiled by editors and contributors who “crisscrossed the country” in search of the best new restaurants. Sozai was the only Michigan restaurant on Bon Appétit’s list.

“You could enjoy overbearing sake-flavored snails, incredibly tender abalone (which were too small to sell elsewhere) and lightly fried prawn heads that we can only describe as chewy – each course was another reason we can’t wait to go back and see what owner Hajime Sato found next,” according to the Bon Appétit writers.

Bon Appetit also noted Sozai for its “mission to serve seafood in the most sustainable way possible.”

Sozai opened in 2021 and was named Detroit Free Press Restaurant of the Year.

The restaurant is also renowned for its multi-course, multi-hour chef’s choice omakase meals, as well as a la carte options. Under what to order Bon Appetit suggested The Chiso’s omakase ($140) which includes an 11-course feast.

Sozai, 449 W 14 Mile Rd., Clawson, is open for dinner from 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Reservations are recommended. For information:
