Tropical Smoothie Cafe to Open South Side | Economic news

Illinois resident Teresa Tedrow knows Terre Haute well as she followed her daughter’s athletic career on the Indiana State University volleyball team.

Now Tedrow plans to open a Tropical Smoothie Cafe on the south side of Terre Haute at 3400 SUS 41 near the Burlington store. The opening is scheduled for Friday, December 17.

“We may have to postpone that date,” Tedrow said last Friday as workers prepared to install cash registers. “They don’t have what they need to install. These are the kinds of issues that we face all the time, and the distribution of our food, just to have a truck here. It will work, ”Tedrow said.

The new company has already hired 25 employees, said a fair number of Tedrow.

“Most are part-time and a few have close to 40 hours. We had a good initial response on people being excited that we are here, ”she said.

Tedrow hired Tricia Wallace as the store manager.

This is the second franchise store for Tedrow, which opened its first Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Quincy, Illinois, in August 2019.

Tedrow frequently travels to Terre Haute to watch his daughter, Melina Tedrow, defensive specialist / libero for the ISU volleyball team.

It is thanks to the visits of her team that Teresa thought of Terre Haute for a new store.

She is also close to her daughter.

Prior to Indiana State, Melina was on an Illinois State Championship 1A volleyball team for Payson-Seymour High School, with her mother coaching the team.

This 2017 team was 41-1. The school is located southeast of Quincy.

Teresa said her daughter, an elderly person, intended to stay in Terre Haute.

“We have three houses here” for short term rentals and said her daughter could manage these properties.

Tedrow said she plans to open up to 10 Tropical Smoothie Cafe franchise restaurants in 10 years, but has been slowed down by the pandemic.

“I have projects, but my delay, like everyone else, is the employees,” she said. “That one [Terre Haute store] took longer than expected because of all the [COVID] problems that we had to go through. I love the brand and think it’s a great opportunity for people to eat healthier.

“I had hoped to open one [restaurant)] every year. My last store was built in seven months, while this one took 18 months, ”she said. “You never know … you keep working on it.”

In addition to a wide variety of smoothies, the restaurant offers flatbreads, wraps, sandwiches and salads.

The first Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened in 1997 in Destin, Florida, and the first franchise opened in Tallahassee the following year.

In September, Tropical Smoothie Cafe celebrated the opening of its 1,000th store in Flower Mound, Texas, according to a press release from the company. It was set to open 130 franchise stores in 2021 and remains on track to meet its goal of 1,500 cafes by the end of 2024, the statement said.
